Pornography

Pornography isn’t confined
To the sexual.
In fact, it has become more pervasive
Than we care to admit.
It’s apparent in the way
We intercourse with life in general.

In man’s world
Everything must be
On a perpetual high-
Growth, profit, success
Romance, attention, appearance-
All must be managed, promised and pursued.

Effect is packaged as impact.
Titillation is now a form of power.
Popularity is an achievement.
Self-gratification is the road to happiness
Seduction is success
And attention is capital.

Pornography in essence
Is a redrawing
Of gaze and glimpse.
It’s a perversion
Of desire and touch.
And a degradation and decimation
Of what makes us human.

Inspiration

The moment is bare.
My questions stand as a reflection.
My answers are unsure of themselves
And refract in search of other possibilities…
Past impressions collide with present gatherings…
The pen awaits its first recollection.
I am deeply conscious of my own emptiness
Or readiness…?
I’m waiting
For an arrival…
My ability to wait
Is my only claim
To an inherent creativity.

Money

Money as a means
Is a blessing;
As an end in itself
It’s a curse.
As a means it provides
As an end it appropriates
As a means it exchanges value
As an end it robs value.

Money is an energy
That supports the business of living.
But it’s not the objective of life.
Ask yourself:
What’s the price you paid
To earn your money?
Can it redeem for you
All that you lost in its pursuit?

Can it sustain its worth
Or does it lose it over time?
Are you making money for money’s sake
By passing off a lesser value in exchange?
Have you normalised
An economic mindset
That sees nothing wrong
In profiting out of thievery?

What if we resolved
To spend more thoughtfully
Seeking value rather than a steal?
What if money could
Be made more true?
Not as wealth in itself
But as a supporter and promoter
Of the wealth already in you.

Life is to be Made

Play an active role
In your own life:

Make tough choices.
Create joy.
Give love.
Provide space.
Bring intelligence.
Leverage opportunities.
Earn respect.
Work for a cause.
Acquire experiences.
Develop capability.
Dream and then recreate the dream.
Inspire and influence.
Leave. Know when you’re not needed.
Accept your fate with faith.
Rest. Redeem yourself.

The Human Being is a Broken Being.

When something breaks
Destiny takes over its purpose.
What becomes of the part,
Separated from the whole-
Depends on the actions
Of many forces.

Life takes over.
Emotions drive it.
Sustenance becomes essential
For survival.
Separated from the whole,
The part searches for its own identity.

It awaits true love…
Searches for something
And someone to belong to.
Unconscious of the truth
That no one thing can complete it-
As it belongs with All.

Life is a journey
To a destination-
A voyage from no-thing
To no-thing.
Our something-ness is maya
That should be lived…endured…
But not preserved or pursued.

Intoxicated with life
We live in a state of forgetfulness
Of who we essentially are;
Adamant to ‘be’ someone whole…
Someone who will be
Loved, remembered…continued.

The feeling of purposelessness
Haunts the part.
Separated from the whole
It may be re-imagined, re-purposed…cultivated.
But it can never become
What it cannot be.

Understanding Design

So much activity, very little action.
So much knowledge, very little understanding.
So many words, very little meaning.
So many functions, very little purpose.
So many pleasures, but very little satisfaction.

Man can only provide
Imagination and variety,
Alternatives, substitutes and evocations
For what evades him in essence.

What is Good?

Originality is good.
The true is good.
The honest is good.
To surrender the material
At the altar of the spiritual
Is good
Self-awareness is good.
To love is good.

Correct knowledge is good.
To overcome weakness is good.
Courage is good.
To adapt to change
But to remain unchanged by it
Is good.
To relate with care is good.
To sustain the good is good.

When the Conversation Ends…

It’s not enough somehow

To be in a relationship…

The relationship must also

Become the mirror

Through which

You can come to see

All that remains unresolved

Suppressed and hidden

Within you.

Your doubts, your fears

Your memories, your pain

Need to be met face to face

Only so that

You can leave them behind.

Relationships must be embraced

Only so that you can eventually

Come to be free of the expectations

That orchestrated the relating.

The purpose of relationships

Is to break down

The myths you carry

Within you, about yourself

So that you may come to see

That you were never in need

Even as you searched for validation

To assert your independence

Disowning your own ignorance.

A good relationship

Is founded on love and faith

It’s a journey that will end in absolution;

And a dissolution

Of all that makes you partial.

You must, in and through it

Come to experience

The disappearance of all

That is unreal.

Leave behind the words

Allow the promises to play out

Be grateful for the tall praises

Forget the short, biting remarks

Understand that relationships

Exist on the tides of time

When the conversation ends

Allow yourself

To rest in silence.

The Right Effort

Effort is conscious action. It is however important to understand where and at what point must one start making an effort. For example, if I try making an effort to be a ‘good’ human being, I may begin my search with the question: What are the qualities of a good human being? How do we spot or identify a good human being? How does a ‘good’ human being act? How does he meet life’s challenges? And yet, despite gathering ‘data’ that answers these questions, all my efforts at being good somehow seem superficial. I feel the need for a truer transformation. I somehow feel certain that what is called for is a single change, that will by inherent virtue, change all that is a misconception; like how darkness disappears in the presence of light. The primary effort that one therefore needs to make is to come to know that which is flawed, that which is untrue. It’s in coming to know the untrue, that truth asserts itself.

Knowledge alone can support effort. The effort is right when it’s objective is the removal of ignorance. We must bear in mind what we’re seeking is not a prosthetic gain, but a restoration.

A Drawing in Still Waters

What is a poem

If not a reflection

Of the mystery of my being

How can I claim authorship

Or even meaningful intent

When my own existence is

Like a drawing in still waters.
